The Animation Process, an Overview

There are four main types of animation in use today:

                   1 2D drawn

                   2 2D computer

                   3 3D model

                   4 3D computer

Of course, a production may well include more than one of the above.
Historically, 2D drawn is the oldest form of animation and it also has the most stages in its production.

The Animation Workflow

What follows is an overall view of the whole animation process. Every production is different, but this describes a typical commercial production's workflow.
The smaller the number of people working on a production, the more these steps will blend into one another.

There are four main stages in animation production. They do not have hard and fast boundaries. Broadly speaking they are:

  1. pre production
  2. production
  3. post production
  4. distribution
